Some Things To Tell Kids After the Boston Marathon Tragedy

04/17/2013 12:00:00

Here are some things you can do to help children:

1) First and foremost, stay calm. The more upset you are, the more children will become upset.  Moods are contagious.

2) Reassure them that they are safe.

3) Turn off the television when young children are around. The images can be frightening.

4) Talk about importance of being kind & emphasize how kind people were to victims. Invite them to think of kind things they can do for each other when someone is hurt.

5) Give them opportunities to talk about it--to express their feelings.

6) Optional: Get them involved in a project to help people in Boston (Doing something good for others can help with anxiety).

7) Be there for them reassuring them of your own love.

Thanks for all you do.  You are a difference maker
